Denise McCluggage

A white helmet with pink dots. It was Denise McCluggage’s trademark. She was an American racing driver, award-winning journalist, photographer and wrote several books. All for equality for women in both raceways and journalism, she shattered stereotypes during a time when women were not necessarily welcome in motorsports. She became the first woman to win the feature sports-car event at Thompson Raceway in Connecticut in 1959, with a Porsche RS. Behind the wheel of a Ferrari 250, she won the GT class at Sebring in Florida in 1961 and became the only female driver inducted into the Sebring International Raceway Hall of Fame. She even raced with Sir Sterling Moss. All motorsport enthusiasts should read her books! She left us in 2015. Photo: Autoweek
